Meet Max Romieu: The Sonic Architect of Puerto Rico’s West Coast
From Toulouse, France, to the chic beaches of St. Barth, and now the laid-back shores of Rincón, DJ Max Romieu has been bringing rhythm and energy wherever he goes. His journey through Europe and the Caribbean has shaped a sound that blends house, minimal, techno, garage, and drum and bass. It’s a style that keeps dance floors moving and minds engaged.
From St. Barth to Rincón
Max’s story on the island began after meeting his wife in St. Barth. Puerto Rico was her home, and she had always dreamed of returning. They eventually made the move to Rincón. But his passion for music didn’t start here. In St. Barth, he and Max Mignot co-created Public Secret, a series of spontaneous tech beach parties where attendees would discover the event at the last minute — no announcements, no schedules, just pure energy.
Those parties became legendary in their own right. Mignon eventually moved to Mexico, and their creative work inspired a record label named Public Secret (@public.secret).
Now in Puerto Rico, Max is a house DJ at Timber and Blues in Aguadilla, bringing his deep, carefully crafted sets every Saturday (and occasionally to their San Juan location). Beyond his residency, Max has a lot in the works collaborating with well-known artists in Rincón, promising new sounds and experiences for the local scene.

Musical Style: A Journey Through Sound
Max’s sets are journeys. Each beat, rhythm, and drop is carefully chosen to move the crowd while telling a story. Whether it’s a late-night club, a beachside gathering, or a high-energy residency at Timber and Blues, he adapts his music to the space, experimenting with texture, mood, and energy. His fusion is a sound that’s unmistakably his own.
Shaping the West Coast Music Scene
Since moving to Rincón, Max has immersed himself in the west coast music scene. He’s also collaborated with local DJs, producers, and artists, helping shape a west coast scene that’s developing its own distinct identity, apart from San Juan. The energy here is diverse, experimental, and full of potential.
This spirit of exploration and collaboration naturally led to the creation of Rhythm Lab PR.
Rhythm Lab PR: Experimentation Meets Community
At the heart of Max’s creative world is Rhythm Lab PR. This platform is not a record label, but a laboratory for sound. Here, music, visual art, and collaboration converge. Max’s creative partner, Stephanie “Muchachha” Díaz, a digital artist, designer, and DJ, contributes to the creative and visual direction, making each event and project a fully immersive experience.
So far, Rhythm Lab has produced:
- RHYTHM TEST 01: In partnership with Funk House Records from San Juan, this event at Timber and Blues featured live recordings filmed on camera and sets from DJs including Rodney Cortés, who many know from his vinyl sets at Tamboo.
- RHYTHM TEST 02: The Fast Lane Record Label Showcase at La Putería Room (Timber and Blues) on October 18.
Rhythm Lab PR is just at the start of its journey, but it’s already shaping the future of electronic music on Puerto Rico’s west coast. More than just events, it’s a hub for experimentation, collaboration, and community, where DJs, visual artists, and creators come together to push boundaries and explore new ways of experiencing sound.
Alongside the RHYTHM TEST showcases, Rhythm Lab runs initiatives like Sound Experiments, which explore the creative choices behind a DJ set, from tempo and rhythm to energy flow. It’s another piece of the puzzle in Rhythm Lab’s mission to a be collaborative and evolving platform
Rhythm Lab also actively engages the community, inviting DJs, producers, promoters, and fans to share perspectives on the strengths, challenges, and opportunities in the local electronic music scene.
