From Stress to Serenity: Addressing Anxiety in Our Community

By: Dujardin Bonet, LCSW, MSW, BTTI

Anxiety isn’t just feeling nervous before a big event—it can be an all-consuming force that disrupts daily life. It is painful, both emotionally and psychologically. Stress is the body’s reaction to pressure or a challenging situation, while anxiety is a prolonged state of fear or worry about present situations and future uncertainties. In Puerto Rico, residents face unique stressors that can contribute to high levels of stress and anxiety disorders. Climate disasters like Hurricanes Maria and Irma, earthquakes, constant water and electrical outages, and the recent tsunami warning, have left many people in a state of constant uncertainty. The current political climate, inflation, and financial strain due to high rent and low wages further exacerbate stress levels.

Chronic stress can lead to serious mental health disorders, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Unfortunately, many people turn to alcohol and substance use as a way to cope, which can lead to further health complications and dependency. Untreated anxiety can negatively impact the body, increasing the risk of heart disease, digestive issues, a weakened immune system, and even chronic pain.

The Benefits of Psychotherapy for Treating Anxiety

Psychotherapy offers a healthier way to manage anxiety. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective methods, helping individuals identify and reframe negative thought patterns. Therapy also provides tools to manage stress, improve emotional regulation, and build coping strategies tailored to an individual’s needs.

For those seeking natural remedies, medicinal cannabis has been shown to reduce anxiety symptoms for some individuals. Herbal treatments such as valerian root and chamomile tea can also promote relaxation. Additionally, mindfulness techniques, regular exercise, and a balanced diet can help regulate stress hormones and improve overall well-being.

Addressing anxiety in a healthy way is crucial for long-term mental and physical health. Seeking therapy, exploring natural remedies, and making lifestyle adjustments can help individuals regain control over their anxiety and improve their quality of life. If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out for professional help is the first step toward healing.
