Craft Beer Industry in Puerto Rico

By: Jeremmie Vélez Rosario

It’s no secret that the craft beer industry has experienced significant growth over the past decade. Microbreweries continue to expand their market presence, while larger-scale breweries ramp up production. Many factors contribute to this growth, but I want to highlight the outstanding work these companies are doing. Not only are they expanding their own businesses, but they are also supporting the overall growth of the craft beer industry on the island.

The Beginnings of Rincón Beer Company

Rincón Beer Company opened its doors to the public in 2014, aiming to enter the world of craft beer. From the start, it was a magical place that added to the vibrant little corner of the island we call home, “Rincón.” After serving as a relief center following Hurricane María and undergoing a lengthy process—since many people were interested in the space—it finally landed in my hands.

I won’t lie—I knew very little, if anything, about craft beers at the time. My initial idea was to create a cocktail bar, even though I also had little experience in that field. I remember that back then, there weren’t many craft breweries on the island. However, as I gradually got to know the ones within my reach, I noticed they all had something in common… Whenever a conversation started, it was always from a positive standpoint, and they were all very open to collaboration.

Gradually, we became integrated into the island’s craft beer industry. Rincón Beer Company was becoming an essential space for craft beer, always offering a vibrant atmosphere, first-class service, great food, good music, and an excellent ambiance. We received many offers from large brands to place their beers permanently in our space. But from the very beginning, we understood the importance of supporting the island’s microbreweries. Even though their products were a bit more expensive, we were contributing to something local and to the growth of an industry we were part of. Additionally, the beers produced here are much fresher and can hold their own against any brewery in the world.

Let me be very clear: Puerto Rico produces high-quality beer. We have creativity, tropical flavors, passion for what we do, originality, and a climate that makes us crave a great beer. Today, you can enjoy fresh beer at our space every Friday, brewed directly at our facility in Rincón, P.R. We produce about 2.5 BBL in keg format, which we sell entirely at our restaurant. Since this is an experimental brewery, you’ll find the occasional creative invention alongside some staple brews made with ingredients sourced from local farmers.

To meet the demand for our brand, we also produce our five canned labels (Sandy Blonde, Overhead IPA, Marejada, B.O.N.U.S., and Bruma) in Carolina, P.R. Our beers are entirely designed to be enjoyed at the beach. We always want our beers to reflect our signature Rincón vibe, which makes us stand out wherever we go. That’s why each label is inspired by a moment or a specific spot along our coast. Our distribution is handled by Ballester Hermanos, whose Craft Beer Puerto Rico division delivers our products to every corner of the island.

Industry Growth

The craft beer industry on the island has experienced exponential growth over the last decade. Today, there are more than 20 breweries in Puerto Rico. Unlike a few years ago, you can now find craft beers in gas stations, wholesale chains, supermarkets, and even small grocery stores. Some places specialize exclusively in craft beer, while others have ditched traditional beer brands in favor of more exclusive offerings from local microbreweries.

Many factors contribute to this significant growth. I personally believe the most important one is the camaraderie among the island’s microbreweries. This is the key to the industry’s continued expansion, and as more microbreweries open, this sense of collaboration only strengthens.

The craft beer industry places a strong emphasis on quality service, so don’t hesitate to explore and enjoy great beer. In fact, there are craft beer trails across the island. Keep an eye on craft beer bloggers and microbrewery pages for events that bring many local brewers together.

Women in the Industry

In honor of Women’s Month, we couldn’t wrap up this article without recognizing the hard work of the women who are essential to this industry’s growth. Although there may be a false perception that this is a male-dominated field, the craft beer industry is for everyone.

I am honored and proud to say that Rincón Beer Company has two incredible brand ambassadors with extensive experience in this industry. Lisandra Montañez Shilansky has been deeply involved in the craft beer world for over 15 years. She has taught me a lot about the industry. As an ambassador, bartender, cider maker, and brand representative, she brings our products to restaurants across the island with expertise and professionalism.

On the other side of the island, we have the energetic, brilliant, and admirable Minelis Méndez Vargas. She adds another 15 years of experience to our team and provides invaluable structure and professionalism.

At our microbrewery in Rincón, you’ll find Bárbara Rodríguez Vega every Friday, bright and early. Dressed in boots, gloves, and goggles, she plays a vital role in beer production. Bárbara has been in the industry for many years. This is her first experience in brewing, but she impresses us weekly with her dedication, care, and hard work. Her commitment helps craft the high-quality products that set us apart.

A Bright Future for Puerto Rican Craft Beer

In summary, Puerto Rico’s craft beer industry has grown tremendously—not only in the number of breweries but also in the quality and diversity of its offerings. This success has been driven by passion, collaboration, and dedication from everyone involved, from brewers to consumers.

It’s especially important to acknowledge and celebrate the key role that women play in this movement. At Rincón Beer Company, we are proud to be part of this journey. With every beer we brew, we hope to continue contributing to the development of our island and the vibrant beer culture we’re building together.

Cheers!
