One Foot in Class, One in the Sand: Get Ready for Summer Now
We’re in that exciting in-between season: the final stretch of the school year, with summer break just around the corner. The kids are counting down the days, and parents are starting to ask: What are we doing this summer?
Before we dive into beach days and ice cream nights, here’s how to get a head start and make the transition from school to summer as smooth (and fun) as possible.
1. Finish Strong
It’s tempting to check out early, but there’s still learning (and some grades) to wrap up. Help your kids:
- Stay organized with end-of-year projects and exams
- Clean out backpacks and school supplies little by little
- Celebrate small milestones, like finishing a tough subject
Bonus: Teachers appreciate when families stay engaged to the last day.
2. Start Your Summer Planning Now
The earlier you plan, the better your chances of grabbing spots in camps, coordinating family trips, and avoiding last-minute stress. Think about:
- What weeks you’ll need childcare or structured activities
- What days you want to keep free for beach trips or family fun
- Any travel plans, guests visiting from off-island, or special events
3. Look Into Camps & Local Activities
Western Puerto Rico has great options for summer programs, but many fill up fast. Now is the time:
- Ask other parents for recommendations
- Check social media for camp announcements
- Make a list of backup options just in case
From arts and dance to nature and science, there’s something for every age and interest. We’ve done the digging for you. Check out our guide to local camps at the end of this article.
4. Take Stock of Summer Gear
Don’t wait until you’re headed to the beach to realize your kid’s swimsuit doesn’t fit. Start now by:
- Checking sizes on swimwear, sandals, and rash guards
- Refreshing basics like sunscreen, reusable water bottles, and beach towels
- Decluttering last year’s summer items to make room for new adventures
5. Talk About Summer Goals and Boundaries
It’s a great time to set intentions. Try this as a family:
- What do we want more of this summer? (Rest, nature, family time, fun?)
- What boundaries should we set? (Screen time, bedtimes, routines?)
- What’s one new thing each person wants to try?
When everyone has a voice in the plan, summer flows better for all.
The school year may not be over yet, but summer is peeking around the corner, full of possibility. A little prep now means less stress later and more time to soak up the sunshine.
So, while you’re packing those last few lunchboxes and helping with final homework assignments, go ahead and daydream about that beach day, that spontaneous road trip, or that lazy morning with no alarm clocks.
Summer is coming. Let’s be ready to enjoy every minute of it.
