60 Years of Villa Cofresí: A Legacy of Hospitality and Family in Rincón

Villa Cofresí is not just a hotel; it is a Rincón institution and holds a cherished place in Puerto Rico’s heart. For six decades, it has been the backdrop to unforgettable moments—from honeymoons and family celebrations to surf tournaments and rebuilding after hurricanes. Today, we celebrate its 60th anniversary by looking back at its history, embracing the present, and looking forward to a bright future.

The Beginnings: A Dream Come True

In 1965, Rubén and Ritín Caro, a young couple with big dreams, purchased a small wooden tin- roofed restaurant by the beach in Rincón. With hard work and dedication, they began saving and collecting materials to transform it into something bigger. Three years later, in 1968, the World Surfing Championship brought travelers from around the world to the region, and Villa Cofresí opened its first guest rooms to welcome them. This marked the beginning of a new era for tourism in Rincón.

Growing Over Time

Rubén and Ritín’s vision knew no bounds. In 1970, they built a swimming pool, offering guests a new experience. By 1975, the lobby became the heart of the hotel, where the five Caro Caro children grew up surrounded by hospitality and family.

But the journey was not without its hardships. In 1980, Hurricane David destroyed the hotel, forcing them to reinvent themselves. Through great sacrifice, they transformed Villa Cofresí into a Condo Hotel, ensuring its continuity. Over the next decade, Sonia and Aladino Ramos managed the hotel, preserving its legacy.

In 1995, after completing their studies, the Caro Caro siblings took over the family business. With a renewed vision, they modernized and expanded the hotel, doubling the original number of rooms and enhancing services. However, nature continued to test their resilience. In 1998, Hurricane Georges caused severe damage, but in just two months, the hotel reopened, stronger than ever.

A Puerto Rican Icon

Between 2000 and 2010, Villa Cofresí solidified its status as a hospitality institution. The reservation systems were modernized, a power generator was installed, and the team grew to over 80 employees. Yet, the greatest challenge came in 2017 with Hurricane María. Despite the devastating impact, the Caro family and their employees worked tirelessly, reopening the hotel in just two months, ensuring the hotel’s survival while supporting the Rincón community.

A Family United by a Passion for Hospitality

Decades later, the visionary woman who founded this place with her husband through hard work and dedication remains the power behind the throne. Today, her children lead the business, each contributing their talents and expertise to continue the family legacy.

Every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., without fail, the siblings gather at Doña Ritín’s table. They begin with a prayer, then move on to discussing pending matters, projects, and results, making key decisions for the hotel’s future. When disagreements arise, a friendly rivalry often emerges—sisters versus brothers. However, if they can’t reach a middle ground, they present their arguments to the family matriarch. At 85 years old, Doña Ritín remains the final voice in every major decision.

After each meeting, a home-cooked Puerto Rican meal from the matriarch herself brings everything back to normal. Business roles are set aside, leaving only the siblings who grew up together.

The Cofresí legacy extends beyond the immediate family to the next generations. Today, there are ten grandchildren who represent the hotel’s future. Many employees are also the children and grandchildren of those who worked in previous generations, forming a large family that has made this place their home and history.
