Why We Do It: The Heart Behind Our Annual Readers’ Choice Awards

Each year, our Readers’ Choice Awards celebrate the people, places, and experiences that make Western Puerto Rico special. It’s one of our favorite projects, not because of the excitement around the voting, but because of what it represents: community pride, connection, and local support.

But this isn’t just about winners or categories. It’s about recognizing the hard work that happens every single day behind the scenes in every small business, from the ones you visit all the time to the ones you may have forgotten to stop by lately. The nominations and voting are simply a reminder (and a little fun).

Running a business, big or small, in our towns takes passion, long hours, and dedication.

We want people to know how hard each and every one of these businesses works every day to serve our community. The list of nominees represents only a fraction of what’s out there, but every café, surf shop, bar, food truck, and service provider plays a role in keeping our community alive and vibrant.

Readers’ Choice isn’t just about your usual favorites. It’s also a reminder to look around and maybe rediscover a place you haven’t been to in a while. Sometimes we forget how good the food, service, or atmosphere was. Or maybe we don’t realize what’s changed, like a seafood spot that now serves an amazing burger, or a shop that added new local art, or a place that completely reinvented itself.
