The Perfect Day Trip
8 Ways to Stretch Summer Before Classes Start
School’s almost back, but there’s still time for a day trip getaway—and Western Puerto Rico puts you within reach of beaches, mountains, natural wonders, and local eats that’ll make you feel like you made the most of summer.
Here’s your day trip guide—each one worth the drive, and back in time for bedtime (if you want).
1. Cayo Aurora (Gilligan’s Island) – Guánica
2 hrs from Rincón
Clear, shallow water. Mangrove tunnels. Bring your own cooler and float in paradise. Cayo Aurora is a protected islet you reach via kayak or ferry from Guánica. Ideal for a family day trip or couples who want that “private island” vibe without a passport.
What to know: Ferry service ends around 4pm, bring shade and water shoes.
2. Charco Azul – Adjuntas
1 hr 40 mins from Rincón
This natural swimming hole in the mountains is cool, refreshing, and surrounded by forest. The drive is winding but beautiful—and 10 degrees cooler than the coast. You can hike a bit, picnic, or just dip and chill.
Pro tip: Pair it with lunch or frappés in Adjuntas town.
3. Mirador de Guánica – Scenic Mountain Lookout
1 hr 30 mins from Rincón
Instead of Cabo Rojo, head inland to the Mirador de Guánica—a panoramic mountain lookout perched above the coast, with incredible views of the valley, ocean, and dry forest below. After snapping a few pics, head down to Playa Santa or Tamarindo Beach for a post-hike dip.
Don’t skip: roadside fruit stands or lechoneras on PR-116.
4. Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge
1 hr 10 mins from Rincón (Lajas)
Birders, hikers, and nature lovers—this one’s for you. Less crowded than most beaches, Laguna Cartagena has boardwalk trails, wetland views, and tons of migratory birds in late summer.
Bring: binoculars, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of water.
5. Yauco Urban Art Walk & Plaza
1 hr 30 mins from Rincón
Yaucromatic is a colorful street art project that turned a quiet southern town into an open-air museum. Walk the painted stairways, grab a frappe, and explore side streets filled with murals and photo ops.
Bonus: Stop by La Nueva Pastelería for pastries + coffee before heading back.
6. Toro Negro Forest & Doña Juana Waterfall
2 hrs from Rincón (Orocovis/Jayuya)
Towering trees, foggy trails, and Puerto Rico’s highest elevation—Toro Negro is a refreshing escape from the heat. Doña Juana waterfall is right off the roadside, or go deeper for hiking and riverside lunch spots.
Go early: You’ll want time to wander and take it slow.
7. Bosque Estatal de Guánica – Dry Forest Reserve
1 hr 45 mins from Rincón
One of the most unique ecosystems in Puerto Rico. Guánica’s dry forest reserve has over 10 hiking trails, ocean overlooks, and rare native flora. It’s quiet, uncrowded, and great for kids who don’t love long hikes but want to “explore.”
Bring: snacks, water, and sturdy shoes. Trail maps are posted at the ranger station.
8. Cañón Blanco – Utuado
1 hr 15 mins from Rincón
This striking white rock canyon hidden in Utuado feels like a desert dreamscape. Hike through shallow riverbeds and boulder your way between limestone walls that glow in the sun. It’s part adventure, part natural spa day—cool water, quiet views, and very few crowds.
Tip: Wear water shoes, bring dry clothes, and go with someone who doesn’t mind a little mud.
Pack the Snacks. Load the Playlist. Hit the Road for a Day Trip (or 2)
From cliffs to caves, mangroves to mountains, the west puts so much within reach. So whether you’ve got one day left or a few, now’s the time to make it count.
