From Yuca to Langosta: What’s Coming Up Around Western Puerto Rico

If you thought the fun was winding down with the end of summer, think again.

Across western Puerto Rico, September, October and November bring another round of patron saint celebrations, food festivals, beer, live music, cultural events and plenty of reasons to spend a weekend exploring different towns.

From Cabo Rojo to Isabela, Aguada to Moca, and Rincón to Aguadilla, the calendar is already filling up. Some events have announced their dates and details, while others are still keeping us in suspense.

Here are some of the events to keep on your radar this fall.

Fiestas Patronales de Cabo Rojo | September 24–27 | Cabo Rojo

Cabo Rojo kicks off its annual Fiestas Patronales, celebrating the town’s patron saint, San Miguel Arcángel.

The celebration takes over the Plaza de Recreo Dr. Ramón Emeterio Betances y Alacán, with the traditional mix of community celebrations, entertainment, food and activities.

It’s one of those weekends when the plaza becomes the place to be, so mark the dates and keep an eye out for the full program as it is announced.

Fiestas Patronales de Aguada | October 1- 4 | Aguada

Aguada gets its turn on October 1 with its annual Fiestas Patronales, taking place at Plaza de Festivales Carlos Ruiz.

The celebration will include live entertainment, with the lineup already beginning to take shape.

Festival de la Yuca | October 3–4 | Isabela

Isabela will celebrate the fifth edition of the Festival de la Yuca at the Plaza de Recreo in Isabela.

The festival highlights one of Puerto Rico’s most beloved foods, with a celebration of local traditions, culture and gastronomy.

Expect a weekend centered around yuca and the people, food and traditions that are part of Puerto Rico’s agricultural heritage.

More programming and event details will be announced as the date gets closer.

La Balseada de Moca | October 9–11 | Moca

La Balseada de Moca is making its return to the Río Culebrinas, with three days of music, food, tradition and plenty of mud at Hacienda Los Sueños Cumplidos.

The weekend gets started Friday, October 9, with a Mask Parranda, followed by a Demolition Derby on Saturday, October 10.

Then comes the part many people will be waiting for: Sunday’s Mud Fun and River Rafting (Balseada), where participants will take to the Río Culebrinas for a day of water, rafts and plenty of fangazo.

Throughout the weekend, there will also be live music and food kiosks, making this one of the more unusual festival weekends on the western Puerto Rico calendar.

If you’re looking for something beyond the usual plaza festival, this one definitely fits the bill.

Beer Olympics | October 10 | Rincón

Things get a little more competitive in Rincón on October 10 when Rincón Beer Company brings its Beer Olympics to the Rincón Plaza

The event is built around teams competing in beer-themed challenges, with the emphasis on competition, teamwork and, naturally, having a good time.

Team registration closes September 28 at 9:00 PM, so start thinking about who you’re taking with you. And maybe start practicing.

Aguadilla Beer Fest | October 17 | Aguadilla

Beer lovers have another date to put on the calendar when the Aguadilla Beer Fest returns on October 17.

The festival will take place along Calle La Marina, Paseo Real Marina, bringing together a variety of local and international beers, food and live music in Aguadilla.

Presented by Aguadilla Turismo, Arte y Cultura, the event is a good excuse to head north for an afternoon and evening of beer, food and music by the water.

Isabela Tiene Sabor | November 7–8 | Isabela

November brings another food-focused weekend to Isabela with Isabela Tiene Sabor, taking place at the Plaza de Recreo.

The event is a celebration of food and local flavors, making it another good excuse to head north for a weekend and see what local cooks and food businesses have cooking.

Festival de la Langosta | November 13–15 | Joyuda, Cabo Rojo

And then there’s the big one for seafood lovers.

The Festival de la Langosta returns to Joyuda in Cabo Rojo for three days, November 13–15.

The celebration will feature the return of the massive arroz con langosta, along with the traditional 5K, live music and entertainment, food, and other activities.

Three days, plenty of lobster and a good reason to make your way to Joyuda.

And Then Comes Navidad

There’s enough on the calendar to keep you busy until, well, you know what happens.

In Puerto Rico, Navidad is never far away. Halloween is barely over before parandas starts showing up, decorations begin going up and the island plunges into one of the longest Christmas seasons in the world.

So eat the yuca, find some lobster, get covered in mud, catch some live music and raise a pint.

Because Navidad is already waiting around the corner and we’ll be here for that, too.
