Here Through Every Twist of This Complicated Little Game Called Life

There’s something about KaféTerra. Something you can’t quite describe, even if you’ve tried. Maybe it’s the perfect cup of coffee; always exactly right, brewed with the kind of precision only someone like Franky, an engineer, could achieve. Or maybe it’s the warmth that hits you the moment you walk in, the kind that doesn’t go away even when they’re slammed. It might even be that subtle look Franky gives you when you order something different. The are you okay today? look. The one that makes you feel loved, cared about.

It’s the little things. You ask for just one egg in your Terra Box because you never finish two, and you find extra strawberries or bananas tucked in anyway. It’s the comfort of knowing that this place, and the people behind it, are steady in a world that feels anything but.

This May marks six years of KaféTerra. Six years of early mornings and long days and familiar faces. Six years of showing up, even when life made that almost impossible.

It Started Before It Started

KaféTerra started in October 2019… sort of.

That’s when a local coffee shop went up for sale and within days, Franky and Allenny signed the contract that would finally make their dream real. Franky left his engineering job to prepare for the opening, while Allenny stayed on a little longer, grateful to the company that had supported them through so many difficult chapters. On paper, that was the beginning. But the dream started years before that. They had a name picked out. They had plans. Life kept getting in the way, as it tends to do, but they never let go of it. They found their way to Rincón, to a small place that became a refuge. A place to imagine something different.

So by the time 2019 arrived, KaféTerra wasn’t just a new business. It was everything that came before it; every detour, every setback, every moment that led them here.

And then, a Pandemic

By early 2020, everything was falling into place. And then… earthquakes. And then, a global pandemic.

They moved forward anyway, one careful step at a time. In May 2020 they opened to make sure the staff at Costa Salud had warm meals while they faced the unimaginable. They cooked, they delivered, they showed up, all while the rest of us stayed locked inside.

A giant banner went up on the building: We are open. Call to order and pick up. Yes!

I remember those days perfectly. The masked knock at the door. Samples of every new recipe, every new idea. Coffee test runs, soup experiments, breakfast creations, pastries, sandwiches. Each one somehow better than the last. Those deliveries were rays of light in the darkest of moments.

They Always Came Back

And still, life kept testing them. Closures and reopenings. Loss and grief. COVID hitting more than once, because apparently the universe has a sense of humor. We joked about saging the place. We worried. And then they came back, every single time, and we were there waiting.

Through all of it, they never stopped showing up for people. And people never stopped showing up for them. It wasn’t just for the food, though the food gave them plenty of reason to. They came because KaféTerra felt like somewhere they wanted to be. Because Franky and Allenny built something that gave back more than it asked for. Every time the doors reopened after a rough stretch, the crowd that showed up was really just saying: we see you, we’re glad you’re here, please don’t stop.

The Family You Choose, and the Family You Build

Somewhere along the way, Chris, yes, that Chris (CHRISin Límites), walked into their lives. He helped carry the harder days and made the good ones even better and became family in the process. It turns out that word, family, was one KaféTerra kept coming back to.

Because while all of this was unfolding, their family was about to change completely. If you noticed the random closed-today posts appearing without explanation, the moments that felt private and delicate; they were leading somewhere. The process was long and unpredictable, requiring action without notice, asking everything of them at once. They didn’t announce it. They didn’t make it public. They just opened their home and hearts to a young girl and let love do the rest. They embraced every moment without knowing how many they’d get. And then, after all of the waiting and uncertainty she became their daughter.

Every closed-today sign had a reason. This was it.

Here’s to Six More

Six years. That’s what we’re celebrating this May. Six years of the most precise coffee you’ll ever drink, made by someone who treats every cup like it matters. Six years of extra fruit tucked into your order and the are you okay? look that makes you feel like a person and not just a customer. Six years of a place that kept choosing this community, over and over, even when things were hard.

And now, on the other side of all of it, there are three of them.

This complicated little game called life throws a lot at you. Franky and Allenny have faced more than their share, and they did it without ever closing their hearts or their doors for good. They kept the coffee hot, the welcome genuine, and the food worth every single trip.

Six years in, KaféTerra is exactly what it was always meant to be.
